The Magic of Self-Belief

What is Self-Belief?

Definition from Collins English Dictionary – “Confidence in yourself and your ability to do things successfully”

What is your definition of self-belief?

To me, self-belief is a catalyst for success and you have to believe in yourself at our times. When things are going well, you may not feel its presence. However, when things are not going so well, you will certainly want to be able to feel it and rely on it.

A classic example in a business setting is that your boss gives you a list of things to complete. You manage to complete it with ease and your boss compliments you on that. So you become very confident. The next day your boss gives you some other tasks to do, you complete it but only this time your boss tells you that your work is not up to standard. You feel bad and a little lost. What would you do?

There are many ways to tackle this problem and all of which will most likely involve the concept of Self-Belief. You have to be courageous, be different and be prepared to repeat the process again and again. You will be challenged along the way but things will only work if you believe in yourself.

The picture of a candle burning in the dark can be used as a metaphor for the idea of Self-Belief.

One way of looking at it is that the candle looks fragile, may go off very easily and “alone” – so to speak. In life when you are faced with uncertainties and difficulties, you may feel alone and lose your sense of direction along the way. You become weak and fill with anxiety. The moment you stop believing in yourself is the moment where your candle will go off.

Another way to look at it is that the candle is shining nice and bright. In life that could well mean that you are well prepared and waiting for the right moment to shine even brighter.

How?

What the picture does not show is that someone is about to use that very candle to light up the fuses of a huge firework.
